"What's the matter with you?" Jessica asked her twin.

It was Tuesday afternoon, and Jessica had gotten home early from cheerleading practice to find Elizabeth sitting in the living room, staring into space.

"This isn't like you," Jessica commented. "Usually you're busy writing something for the newspaper or doing something else equally constructive with your spare time." She sat down on the couch and inspected her sister intently. "I don't see what you can possibly be upset about. You don't have to spend your Tuesday evening addressing a local junior high as Miss Teen Sweet Valley."

Elizabeth sighed. "The truth is, I don't have anything to do tonight. I was supposed to go over to Todd's house to study. Only guess what? He canceled on me."

"So?" Jessica said with an unsympathetic shrug. "Big deal. Can't you study here?"

"You don't understand. Todd's been . . . oh, I don't know, different," Elizabeth said. Her voice sounded like it was close to breaking. "I think he's really upset with me, only he won't talk about it. Remember I told you that he thought we needed more private time together, more time to be just a twosome? Well, I didn't take him seriously enough. And now he doesn't seem to want to be alone with me. Now he only wants to do things in big groups. I was the one who had the idea to study alone together tonight, and he just called and told me he isn't feeling very well."

Jessica frowned. "Hmm. Sounds like he's paying you back, giving you a taste of your own medicine."

"Todd wouldn't do that," Elizabeth protested. "Would he?" Elizabeth looked helplessly at her twin.

"Why not?" Jessica said. "Listen, why don't you plan a really romantic evening with him? It sounds to me as if all you two need is one really fantastic night together to get the chemistry back. Why don't you kidnap him and take him up to Miller's Point?" she suggested with a giggle.

"Kidnap him . . ." Elizabeth mused. "You know, you're pretty smart for a beauty pageant winner. You may have hit on something," she cried.

Jessica was right. She and Todd needed more than time alone together; they needed some thrilling romance! Kidnapping Todd might just be the answer. She'd been too insensitive to hear him when he had been pleading with her for some time alone. Now she was going to have to take extreme measures to show him she'd gotten his message loud and clear.
